Summary: Following a nearly five-year battle with cancer, Elaine Andrist, 77, Crosby, wife of District 2 Senator, John Andrist, died Oct. 7, 2008. Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Crosby. Following a lunch, she will be buried in a family plot at Crosby City Cemetery. There will be a prayer service for family and friends at 7:30 p.m. today at Stakston-Martin Funeral Home, Crosby. The oldest of six children born in Wildrose to Joe and Emma (Jacobson) Thvedt, Elaine spent her life in Divide County. She was raised on a farm 17 miles south of Crosby, was baptized at Skabo Lutheran Church near Alamo, and was confirmed at Concordia Lutheran in Crosby. She was salutatorian of the Crosby High School Class of 1949. Elaine spent two years at Minot State University, where she earned a standard teaching degree. She returned to Crosby and married her high school sweetheart, John Andrist, June 17, 1951. Music was also at the center of her existence. She sang in the Crosby Presbyterian Church choir and played the organ there for nearly 40 years. She has never missed singing in a performance of Northwest Chorus, and she played significant roles in a long series of musical theatre productions in Crosby, either as a cast member or as musical chorus director. She taught private piano lessons in her home for many years. One of her special joys for many years was an annual outing with her daughters to operas in Des Moines, Minneapolis or Santa Fe. Another was the love for her yard, garden and flowers. She was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church from 1951 until it closed and she joined Concordia Lutheran. For many years Elaine was a dedicated member of the Progressive Study Club, and later of the Town and Country Study Club. From 1974 to 1980, she served as a member of the Divide County School District board. But nurturing her children and particularly her husband, were central to her life. She traveled extensively with John in his newspaper career, and was a gracious first lady when John was president of the National Newspaper Association in 1989-90. Together they travelled to 26 state and regional meetings that year. Until illness intervened, she was a partner in campaigns for the Senate, visiting communities throughout northwestern North Dakota. Elaine is survived by her husband and five children, Pam (Mike) Burns, Fargo, Steve (Barbara), Crosby, Paula (Andrew) Holmberg, Minnetonka, Minn., Stan (Jan Nelson), Fargo, and Penny (Gail Benson), Fargo. She is also survived by her twin sister, Eileen (Wayne) Aurand, Cedar Falls, Iowa; sisters, Ardith Andrist, Tulsa, Okla., and Sharon (Rick) Walker, Lake Park, Minn.; and brothers, Rev. James (Gloria) Thvedt, Brookings, S.D., and Joel Thvedt, Alamo. There are also 11 grandchildren, Aaron (Jenna) Burns, Dallas, Jenni Burns, Fargo, Elizabeth (Cole) Thomsen, Fargo, Chelsea Burns (Drew Estrem), Fargo, Graham (Kristin) Andrist, Bismarck, Levi (Bethany) Andrist, Grand Forks, Evan Andrist, Crosby, Andrew and Kaatrin Holmberg, Minnetonka, and Jonah and Hannah Andrist, Fargo. Just this year, two great-grandchildren were born, Nora Andrist, Bismarck, and Otto Thomsen, Fargo.
