His funeral was celebrated at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Williston. Rev. Christopher Raiford officiated and interment followed at Riverview Cemetery in Williston. George was born on May 29, 1917 in Williston to William and Nellie (Lyon) Atol. He was raised on the family farm in Bull Butte Township and was educated in Williams County schools. On December 23, 1939, he was united in marriage to Myrtle Storseth in Sidney, Montana. The couple had lived in Williston their entire married life of 70 years. In 1936 as a young man, George went to work as a machinery operator and mechanic for the Work Projects Administration (WPA), and helped in completing the Buffalo Dam Project. In 1941 George went to work for Stockman Motors. He started as a “grease monkey” as it was referred to in those years. He moved up the ranks to a mechanic and went on to become the Service Manager where he performed that duty for over 20 years before retiring in 1985 after a forty-four year career. George was a car enthusiast. In the 1970s he was involved in the operation of Williston's Speedway, performing many volunteer duties. He also helped found the Williston Vintage and Classic Car Club and helped run the club for many years. After his retirement his career turned to hobby. He rebuilt Ford Flathead engines for his customers all over America as well as restored cars locally. He traveled to many car shows throughout the state showing many of his restorations, including his personal favorite, a red '57 T-Bird. George was a loyal longtime member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, the Elks, and the Williston Moose Lodge. He also enjoyed time spent having coffee with friends at Hardees, Economart and Service Drug. George is survived by his wife, Myrtle of Williston; his son, Bill and Kimber Atol of Williston; three grandchildren, Anna Atol of Huntington Beach, CA, Eli Atol also of Huntington Beach, and Madison Atol of Williston; a sister, Charlotte Lystvedt of Minot; and many nieces and nephews.
