Summary: Roger Backen, 63, of Crosby, ND, formerly of Epping, ND, passed away February 8, 2009 after an extended illness, at the Trinity Hospital in Minot, ND. His Memorial Service was celebrated at the Everson Memorial Chapel in Williston, ND. Rev. Steve Anderson officiated and burial was in Hillside Memory Gardens, Williston. Roger John Backen was born October 29, 1945 in Williston. He was the eldest son of five children born to Rueben and Arlene (Snydal) Backen. Roger grew up on the family farm near Epping and graduated from Epping High School. Roger attended college at Minot College of Business for two years and subsequently enlisted in the US Navy. Roger spent the next six years in the Navy, four of which were spent in nuclear submarine duty. After his tour ended, Roger proceeded to have a very colorful work life. Roger worked at Con Edison in New York City, welded in Illinois, was a quality assurance supervisor, and a nuclear technician in nuclear power plants in both Illinois and Louisiana. During the last six years, he again served his country working as a US Border Protection Officer at Ports of Entry at Portal and Noonan, ND. Roger enjoyed riding his Redwing motorcycle, fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, gardening, and downhill skiing. Roger’s journey on this earth is over, but our time with him will give us a lifetime of memories. Roger is survived by his father, Rueben Backen of Williston; one brother, Gerald Backen and his wife, Renee of White Plains, MD; two sisters, Kathy (Backen) Andersen of West Fargo, ND and Barbara (Backen) Hart of Kalispell, MT; and a brother-in-law Bill Thomas; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Arlene, and a sister, Patricia Thomas

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
