Summary: Irene J. Backer, age 79, Mandan, died July 14, 2007 at Med Center One Hospital in Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan,with Father John Mathai as celebrant. Burial was in Mandan Union Cemetery. Irene was born on June 30, 1928 in Judson, ND, the daughter of Henry and Alma (Wuertz) Borchers. She graduated from New Salem High School. On May 29, 1948, Irene was joined in marriage to Paul Backer in Mandan. Throughout her life, Irene’s most loved and treasured trait was that of being a wife and mother. It was her life’s joy. Irene was especially proud of being a Gold Star Mother since 1968. In 1993, Governor Schaefermade a proclamation recognizing all Gold Star Mothers in North Dakota. In 1979, Irene was appointed as an Extraordinary Minister by Bishop Hilary Hacker. Again in 1987 and 1990, she was reappointed as an Extraordinary Minister by Bishop John F. Kinney. Irene was a caring and positive person. She cherished anytime that could be spent socializing and visiting with friends and family. Irene was an avid reader enjoyed sewing, needlepoint and embroidery. Irene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. A special thank you goes to Maggie Dillman, Irene’s Senior Companion. Irene’s gentle spirit will be missed by her three sons, Paul (Shannon) of Bismarck, Jim (Linda) of Mandan and John of Mandan; seven grandchildren, Bryan Backer, Corey Backer, Jody Engelhardt, Amy Backer, Melissa Schaaf, Ryan Roth and Jeffrey Roth; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Erna Christian of San Diego, CA and Florence (Anton) Weekes, Jr. of Bismarck and one siste-in-law, Cecelia Borchers of Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul, who died in 1970; one son, William; two sisters, Emma Seifert and Alice Ulmer and five brothers, Clarence, Herman, Arnold, Harold and Erwin Borchers.

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
