Summary: Ronald Backhaus, 77, Linton, formerly of Pollock, SD, died Friday, February 27, 2009 at Strasburg Care Center, Strasburg, ND. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church, Pollock, SD, with Rev. Floyd Haan officiating. Burial was in Dale Cemetery under the direction of Myers Funeral Home, Linton, ND. Ronald Backhaus was born October 11, 1931 in Emmons County, ND, the son of William and Ethel (Whalen) Backhaus. He attended country school. Ron served in the US Army from 1952 – 1954. He married Evelyn Ryckman on September 6, 1954 at Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm near Pollock until 1962. They moved into Pollock, where Ron worked several different jobs. He worked at the Pollock Elevator, Pollock Cheese Plant, and Pollock Lumber Yard. Ron was also Pollock City Police Chief and Campbell County Deputy Sheriff and Coroner. After his retirement he drove school bus for the Pollock Public School and planted trees with the Emmons County Soil Conservation. Ron enjoyed fishing, hunting, and visiting with family and friends. Ron served as Deacon and Elder at the Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church. He also taught Sunday School. Ron was a member of Pollock American Legion and was a Gideon. Ron is survived by his wife: Evelyn; one son and daughter-in-law: Bill and Vicki Backhaus of Bismarck, ND; three daughters and sons-in-law: Debbie and Fred Morgan of Flagstaff, AZ, Cheryl and Leslie Dale of Ashley, ND and Rhonda and Tim Dockter of Linton, ND; 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and one sister and brother-in-law: JoAnn and Ronald Ryckman of Pollock, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Jonathon Morgan and one brother, Norman Backhaus.

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
