Summary: Terrance Cecil Backman, age 60 of Souris, ND, passed away October 29, 2010. A memorial service was held November 3, 2010 at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau, ND. Officiating at the service was the Revernd Glenn Berge. Military honors were presented by the Bottineau American Legion and VFW Posts, and the North Dakota National Guard. Honorary casket bearers were all of Terry’s family and friends. Burial was at the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery, rural Souris. Terry was born in Bottineau on July 24, 1950, to Harold and Loretta (Erdman) Backman. He was raised on the family farm north of Souris with his brother, Guy and twin sisters, Vonda and Rhonda.He attended school in Souris. He was a member of the Turtle Mountain Church until the time of its closing. Terry served with the U.S. Army from March 6, 1970 to October 7, 1971 in Vietnam. He was a member of the Army Reserve until March 1, 1976. After returning from Vietnam, Terry lived and worked on the family farm. On June 28, 1975 Terry married Stephanie Coliton of Westhope, ND. They made their home north of Souris where Terry continued to work as a farmer and rancher. Terry, with the help of his brother and father, built his family a log home a mile from where he grew up. Terry was an active member of his community. He was active in the Souris Volunteer Fire Department.He served on the Harem Township board, the Swedish Lutheran Church board and the Souris school board. Terry was an avid outdoorsman, engaging in hunting, fishing, trapping and snowmobiling. His other hobbies included leather craft, knife making and meat curing.

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
