Summary: Joseph Barkie, 99, Williston, ND, passed away at his home November 18, 2017. His Mass of Christian burial was celebrated November 25, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Williston with Father Russel Kovash officiating. Interment was in Riverview Cemetery. Joseph (Joe) Barkie was born February 17, 1918, in Bull Butte Township, Williams County, ND, to George and Mary (Shaheen) Barkie. He was the ninth child and was raised and attended schools in the community. On March 27, 1937, he married Edna Albert and they had seven children. This marriage later ended in divorce. Joe moved to Williston and on December 26, 1968, he married Lyla Wells. Joe spent most of his life farming. When he moved to Williston, he worked at various jobs including the City of Williston and helping neighbors on their farms with fencing and anything else that needed to get done. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and cards, but he really loved visiting with family and friends. Surviving Joe are his daughters, Joan Nelson, Glasgow, MT, Donna (John) Martinez, Williston, Delorise (Gary) Lund, Yakima, WA, Deha Barkie, Kent, WA, Jeannie (Bob) Smith, Lakewood, WA, and Janice (Dusty) Shaldt,Kenmore, WA; his son, Joey (Shirley) Barkie, Williston; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; greatgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Preceding Joe in death were his parents; his wife, Lila; brothers, Aesoph, Mike, Alfred, Wilbur, Edward, Charles, and Sammy; and sisters, Effie, Rose, and Ramsey.

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
