Summary: Charles M. Allmaras New Rockford March 27th, 1942 Charles M. Allmaras died on March 27th from a gunshot wound received on March 26th by Andrew T. Gross, Eddy County farmer. In less than 30 hours after a shooting fracas at his farm home in Lake Washington Township, Mr. Gross entered the State Penitentiary to begin a life sentence for the murder of Sheriff Charles M. Allmaras. Gross pled guilty and signed a confession of First Degree Murder before Justice of the Peace Henry S. Grinde and State's Attorney R. G. Manly and was taken to Jamestown where District Judge R.G. McFarland sentenced him to life in prison. Gross was apprehended by the State's Attorney and a posse of 20 men at his farm home, after attempts to escape in the Sheriff's car had failed. Instrumental in his capture were Manly, Fred Carlson, and Lloyd Austin who persuaded the killer to lay down his gun. The shooting occurred when Mrs. Gross and Sheriff Allmaras drove into the farm yard to get some personal belongings of Mrs. Gross, who planned divorce action against her husband. The pair was followed by Joseph Fautsch, who was going to truck the goods to New Rockford. Gross shot Allmaras once, then put a bullet through the front tire of Fautsch's truck as he backed around to go to the J. J. Brown home and telephone local authorities. He drove the truck a half mile down the road and got a ride to the Brown home where he put in a call for help. Meanwhile, Deputy Sheriff George Dunham and Adam Zuber, District Juvenile Officer from Fessenden, drove past the farm on their way to Hamar and saw the shooting. They managed to rescue Sheriff Allmaras and get him in their car without being hit by Gross who was still bent on killing the Eddy peace officer. Allmaras was brought to the New Rockford city hospital where he passed away the following morning from four gunshot wounds to his shoulder, abdomen, arm and back. Charles Mark Allmaras was born in eastern Wells County January 5th, 1891, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Allmaras. He was wed November 15th, 1916, to Miss Irene Barret at Broadview, Montana, and lived in the vicinity until 1918 when he purchased a farm in Munster Township. Mr. Allmaras made success of farming and in 1940 was elected Sheriff of Eddy County, moving to New Rockford and taking over his duties on his 50th birthday in 1941. He is survived by his wife and eight children, James of Inglewood, CA; Mrs. Lloyd Allmaras of New Rockford; Lucille, Leo, Lois, Thomas, Richard, and Robert, all of New Rockford. He is also survived by seven brothers and two sisters.
