Summary: Sam Douglas Loyal Township - McKenzie County October 1917 Williston Graphic Thursday 1 November 1917 Two Ranchers Killed in Duel at Squaw Gap. Alexander, N.D. October 30. Following an inquest into the murder of Sam Douglas and Allen Philips, which occurred at the Philips ranch Saturday night, Coroner J. C. Hinman returned a verdict finding that each man had shot the other and that all others concerned with the affair were blameless of the shocking murder which followed after the men had a dispute. Douglas was constable of Loyal Township and according to evidence submitted at the coroner's inquest, he went to the Philips home to arrest Robert Philips on a minor offense as a result of some trouble the !ad had with other boys. Philips demanded to see the warrant for the boy and Douglas refused to show him. The father ordered Douglas off the ranch and enforced his order with a gun. The constable left the premises when threatened. It was only a short time, however, until Douglas was back and this time he was armed with a 30-30 rifle. He got the drop on both the Philipses and was going to take both of them when the older Philips grabbed a shotgun that was at hand. It appears that the constable and Philips both fired at the same instant because both went down mortally wounded the next instant. Douglas received the full charge of the shotgun in the neck, the jugular being torn and he died almost instantly. Philips had a clean bullet hole through his right breast and he lived only thirty minutes after the shooting. Both men were well known in the ranch country south of Alexander. Douglas donated land for a cemetery for the Squaw Gap community about a year ago and he will now be one of the first settlers to be buried in the place. The Douglas funeral is being held today and Allen was buried yesterday at Sidney.
