Summary: Chief P. A. (Tex) Goyne Date of Death: April 22, 1971 New Salem Police Department New Salem, North Dakota Age at Death: 56 Chief Goyne was patrolling the city of New Salem, North Dakota, when he observed George Picha, a farmer from the Sweet Briar area. An arrest warrant had been issued for Mr. Picha for writing non-sufficient fund checks. Chief Coyne radioed and requested that they call his wife and tell her that he would be late getting home. A short time later, a passing citizen saw Chief Goyne's vehicle and another vehicle parked nearby. The citizen found Chief Goyne lying next to the patrol vehicle. He had been shot once in the head with a.32 cal. pistol. His service revolver was still in his holster. George Picha was lying in the street. He had also died of a.32 cal. gunshot to the head. Mr. Picha had shot Chief Coyne and then turned the gun on himself. Chief P. A. (Tex) Goyne had been the chief of police of New Salem, North Dakota, since August of 1967. He was married and the father of five children.
