Henry S. Halvorson
Grand Forks
March 1952
Grand Forks Herald, Tuesday 11 March 1952,
Franklin appointed as sheriff.
R. B. Franklin, Deputy Sheriff for the past three years, Monday was appointed Sheriff of Grand Forks County to succeed the late Henry Halvorson, 51, who was fatally injured Sunday in a three-vehicle accident near Tappen. The appointment was made at a special
meeting of the board of county commissioners Monday afternoon.
Franklin has been a resident of Grand Forks County for 24 years and has lived in Grand Forks since 1944. He is a member of the North Dakota and Red River Valley Police Officers Associations and is a veteran of World War I. He is married and the father of three
daughters and a son.
Meanwhile, funeral services for Halvorson were set for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Assembly of God Church in Grand Forks with Rev. Clarence Larson officiating. Burial will take place in the family plot at the Northwood Cemetery.
The fatal accident occurred when a car driven by Halvorson passed a car driven by Kenneth Leben of Bismarck and collided head-on with a truck driven by Emil Metz, 36, of Jamestown, according to the Associated Press. Leben's car rammed into the rear of the Halvorson machine.
Three other persons were hospitalized with injuries sustained in the accident. Hospitalized were Leonard Carlson, 16, a trusty at the Grand Forks County jail; Earl Ardell Heen, Grand Forks, who was being taken to the state prison at Bismarck by Halvorson to serve a sentence on a nonsupport charge, and Metz. None of the injured was in serious condition, it was reported Monday.
Leben was accompanied by his wife and 10-month-old son. He and his wife were uninjured and the infant sustained only a bump on the head. Their car was not badly damaged. Halvorson died en route to a Bismarck hospital. Tappen is about 53 miles east of Bismarck.
Mr. Halvorson was born July 25, 1900 on a farm in Northwood Township, Grand Forks County and attended country school in that township. He was married September 7, 1933 at Northwood to Miss Corella Ida Bakken, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hans C. Bakken of Northwood.
Mr. Halvorson engaged in farming for several years before his appointment as Chief of Police at Northwood, in which post he served 9-1/2 years. From 1944-46 he was a defense plant guard in Seattle, Wash. and from 1946 to 1948 he served as Police Chief at Larimore, N.D.
He was nominated for sheriff of Grand Forks County three times before he was elected in 1948. In 1940 he was defeated in the fall election by Gerald Rostberg, and in 1944 he lost a close November election race to A. J. Ulvedal. Four years later he was named sheriff
over W. J. Mohler and he was in the last year of his second two-year term at the time of his death.
While at Northwood, Mr. Halvorson was a member of the Commercial Club and the fire department. During his residence in Grand Forks, he engaged actively in church work. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church and was prominent in the work of the Christian Business Men’s Committee and the Youth for Christ organization. He was secretary of the Grand Forks Gideon Society at the time of his death.
Surviving are his wife; one married son, Ardell, 24, Everett, Washington; one daughter, Darlene, 12, at home; and one brother, John S. Halvorson of Northwood. Ardell is the son of Halvorson by a previous marriage.
