Summary: Sheriff Ralph J. Hansen Date of Death: May 5, 1962 Ransom County, Lisbon, North Dakota Age at Death: 45 Sheriff Ralph J. Hansen was fishing from the bank of the Sheyenne River north of Lisbon, North Dakota, on the opening day of fishing season in 1962. A young man of 13 had lost a fishing bobber and waded into the river to retrieve it. A strong river current pulled the young man into the river. Sheriff Hansen, a non-swimmer, waded into the river after the boy and the current pulled him into approximately 15 feet of water. Several people, including the LaMoure County game warden, Harold Bellin, attempted to save the sheriff, but they were unsuccessful. The young man was pulled from the river and survived the ordeal. The sheriff's body was pulled from the water approximately an hour later. Sheriff Ralph J. Hansen had served as sheriff for three years and was not married.
