Summary: William Walter Hansen Velva September 1950 Minot Daily News, Thursday 22 September 1950. Velva officer electrocuted in moving highline wire William W. Hansen 44, Velva policeman, was killed instantly at Velva Wednesday afternoon when he attempted to move a high voltage wire which had blown down during high wind. Hansen, who had been employed as day policeman at Velva since resigning from the Minot force in May 1949, met his death as he attempted to move a 2,300-volt Otter Tail Power Co. cable which had fallen across a residential street two blocks west of Velva's Main Street. Eyewitnesses saw Hansen collapse over the wire and summoned aid. Two Velva businessmen, Virgil Christensen and John Geigla, were first to arrive at the scene, and employed a piece of lumber to move Hansen's body from the wire. Dr. T. E. McGauvran of Minot, who has an office at Velva, arrived a few minutes later, but neither he nor members of a resuscitation squad summoned from the Minot Fire Department, were able to revive Hansen. His body was not burned. Hansen is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Margie Julson of Minot, and two small sons, Carl Leslie and Donald LeRoy. Also surviving are his father, Carl Hansen of rural Velva, a sister, Mrs. Roy Hutton of Towner, and an uncle, Robert Steinborn, North Battleford, Sask. His mother and an uncle, Bernie Steinborn, were killed in an automobile accident near Phoenix, Arizona, last February. Hansen was employed by the Minot Police Department as a patrolman from July 1, 1948 until May 9, 1949. Funeral services will be conducted at the Oak Valley Lutheran Church at Velva. The Sands-Gunnerud Funeral Home of Velva is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hansen was born at Voltaire on November 8, 1905. He married the former Sara Livingston at Towner on January 1, 1928.
