Summary: Jacob M. Hoerner - City Police Officer New Leipzig, North Dakota September 7, 1942 Three men succumb from gas poison. Tragedy occurred on Monday forenoon at the Kallis Coal Mine. The worst tragedy for this section of the country occurred Monday forenoon at what is known as the Kallis coal mine located northwest of here a short distance in Hettinger County when three New Leipzig citizens lost their lives. John Webb, operator of the mine, and Ruben Pastian, an employee, went into the mine and started the gasoline engine to pump out the water. Walter Banning was near and went into the mine, finding it filled with gas and returned just in time to keep from being suffocated, and Gott Kallis had a similar narrow escape. Robert Tietz went into the mine to aid in the rescue but made his escape without injury. It can be seen that several more had narrow escapes from death and the tragedy could have been worse. The news was brought to town and a number of citizens went out to assist in the rescue. J. M. Hoerner and Wm. Johnson with gas masks were let into the mine but the masks were not suitable for the monoxide gas which was so dense as to allow visibility for only a few inches. Mr. Johnson escaped but Mr. Hoerner remained until taken out later, as were the other two. The mine is said to be from 40 to 50 feet deep. The three men were brought to town under the care of Drs. Murray, Jacobson and Salomone, who, with others, worked very patiently to produce artificial respiration and restore life, but all efforts failed and death was pronounced at intervals during the afternoon. Jacob M. Hoerner, son of John and Magdalena Hoerner, was born November 30, 1894, at Glen Ullin, N.D. On November 28, 1916 he was married to Miss Agnes Yambra. To this union seven children were born, one died in infancy. They are: Raymond, in an Army camp in Texas; Mrs. Frank Zubrod, Lawrence, Lenoa, Quentin and Virginia, all at home. A public funeral was held Friday forenoon in the hall with Rev. Fr. Radermacher in charge and followed by services in the church. Interment was made in the local Catholic cemetery. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, children and three brothers and four sisters as follows: Steve, Ft. Lawton, Wash; Adam, in the Navy at Pearl Harbor; Mrs. John Wurtz, Spokane, Wash; Mrs. Steve Yambra and Mrs. Joe Schafer, Seattle, Wash; and Mrs H. J. Schafer of New Leipzig, all in attendance at the funeral except Adam and Mrs Yambra, as she was not able to come. Mr. Hoerner will be missed in this city as he was connected with many activities and in the end gave his life to save others. His place in the affairs of New Leipzig will be hard to fill. He had been a resident here for more than twelve years and had many friends who are sorry to have him leave our midst. We feel assured that the family has the sympathy of the entire community.
