Summary: Christian Anton Madison Stanley August 1922 C. A. Madison, who for one month officiated as night watchman in Stanley, was shot and died two hours later on Friday, August 18, 1922. A transient was causing some disturbance in the Commercial Hotel and the night police was summoned. Mr. Madison arrived on the scene in a few minutes but the rowdy had left the hotel and was out in the street. Mr. Madison went after him to arrest him. When the transient refused arrest, Madison insisted he cooperate. When he finally gave in, he made a rush for the officer. Madison pulled his.45 caliber revolver and shot to the ground to scare the man. He placed his gun back in his holster and, grabbing his billy, he tried to subdue the rowdy. The men grappled and fought in the darkness, their struggles clear from across the street. Madison, who was a very powerful man, finally threw the transient, who appeared to be equally as strong, on the ground and sat on him. He struck him over the head a time or two until the man finally gave up. Madison got off the prisoner and as he did the prisoner grabbed the officer on the arm, took his gun from the holster and without warning, shot him through the stomach. Hethen struck Madison in the head three or four times before making off into the darkness. The shooting took place around midnight that night. The wounded man was taken to the doctor's office but attempts to save his life failed and he died two hours later. The people of the town were aroused, and under direction of the sheriff, a systematic effort was soon underway to apprehend the murderer. He was found seven hours later in a wheat shock south of the city. Arrested was Harold Carter, 29, who had previously been held in two penitentiaries prior to his capture here for burglary crimes. As a result of the trial on November 24, 1922, for the murder of C. A. Madison, Carter was sentenced to 20 years in the North Dakota State Penitentiary Christian Anton Madison, 60, was born in Lindberg, Tasla, Denmark on August 2, 1862 and at the age of four he came to the United States. He left behind his wife, four children, four sisters and one brother.
