Summary: Beryl E. McLane LaMoure - July 1954 Jamestown Sun July 31, 1954 Highway Patrolman McLane killed in head-on collision. LaMoure N. D., B. E. McLane, 58, Napoleon and formerly of Jamestown, a member of the North Dakota Highway Patrol since 1941, was killed in a head-on auto crash on state Highway 13 here Friday afternoon. Patrol headquarters in Bismarck said his death marks the first time a North Dakota patrolman has been killed in the line of duty. According to Robert Kyllingstad, highway patrolman stationed at LaMoure, McLane was traveling toward LaMoure in his patrol car when an oncoming car veered into his lane of traffic and the two vehicles collided head-on, killing McLane instantly. Kyllingstad said the accident occurred about five miles west of LaMoure. The second car contained three New Rockford, N. D. men. Kyllingstad said the three were hospitalized at Oakes, N. D. They are Ernest Anderson, 26, driver of the car, Jackson Dodo, 19, and Darrel Trudeau. Most seriously injured was Trudeau, who suffered a fractured arm, lacerations and other undetermined injuries. Anderson and Dodo received severe lacerations but were reported in good condition. The men were employed on a highway project near Edgeley, ND, by Archie Campbell Construction Co. of New Rockford. Donald Dobmeier, LaMoure County coroner, said an inquest will be held Tuesday or Wednesday. McLane's death was the 64th on North Dakota highways this year. There were 77 in the same period of 1953. The three men were under police guard Friday night at the hospital, Kyllingstad said. It had not been determined what charges would be filed. Prior to the accident, Kyllingstad said he received a report of three intoxicated persons at the LaMoure Dam. When he arrived at the dam, he was told the men had headed west on Highway 13 in their car. Kyllingstad said he started in pursuit and came upon the accident a few moments later. Surviving are Mrs. McLane; a son, Robert, Napoleon; a daughter, Mrs. Olai Attleson, Jamestown; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Glenn, Letcher, S.D. and Leith, Los Angeles, Calif. His parents and a brother preceded him in death. Mrs. McLane and son Robert are here at the Attleson home. Mr. McLane was born in and attended school in South Dakota. He was a veteran of World War One.
