Summary:
Edward M. Morris - Chief Of Police
New Rockford, North Dakota May 31, 1926
Chief Of Police Died Monday Evening After Gallant Fight For Life. "Ned" Morris succumbs to Pernicious Anemia after many months of illness. Death comes as a result of assault.
Injuries Received In Performance of His Duty as Watchman, finally Brings Death.
E. M. Morris, for the past year and a half Chief of Police of this city, died Monday night of pernicious anemia from which he had suffered ever since his injury on November 17th, 1924, when he was shot and beaten by yeggs in the performance of his duty as night watchman. As will be recalled Mr. Morris surprised three yeggs, endeavoring to gain an entrance into the Jahnke confectionery on that fateful night. Coming around the corner with a suddenness which precluded their escape, he engaged them in conflict and was shot through the lungs as well as beaten severely over the head with a pick handle. For days he hovered between life and death, but his wonderful constitution finally carried him through to apparent victory, and he was finally able to again resume his duties. A vacancy occurring in the office of chief of police, he was elevated to that position as a well deserved recognition of his honorable performance of duty as a peace officer.
He continued to improve for some time, but gradually the terrible injuries which he suffered brought on the condition which caused his death, and for the past six months he had been slowly losing the battle for health and strength. Several blood transfusions had been given him, but of no avail and for some time past it was known that the end was not far off, and final dissolution came peacefully Monday night.
Deceased was fifty-one years and four months old, having been born at Fort Totten on February 1st,
1875. For many years he has been a highly esteemed resident of New Rockford, a good citizen and one who numbered as his friends all who had the privilege of his acquaintanceship, and they will all sincerely regret his passing away.
Funeral services were conducted at the Congregational Church yesterday afternoon at two o'clock, the services being in charge of the members of the local lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, with Rev. Harris delivering the funeral oration. The remains were interred in the cemetery north or this city; a large concourse of sorrowing friends attending the last sad rites for a beloved brother and friend.
He leaves to mourn his departure besides his wife, three sons, Fennimore, of San Francisco, and Mervin and Morton of New Rockford; three daughters, Reta, who is employed in Buffalo, ND, Dorothy, attending the A. C. in Fargo, and Jean of New Rockford. He also leaves two brothers, George and John of Warwick, and three sisters, Mrs. Fred Speck of New Rockford, Mrs John Setz of Warwick and Miss Margaret, also of Warwick, and to them all the sincere sympathy of the entire community is extended in their hour of deep sorrow in the departure of a loving husband, a kind and indulgent father and a brother whose kindly sympathy was an ever ready fount in time of trouble.
