Summary: Northern Pacific Wahpeton Globe November 16, 1899 North Dakota Happenings Railway Detective James Rauland was killed by a train robber at Williston. Rauland was in the employ of the Northern Pacific railroad, and received orders to go to Williston to arrest three men who had robbed the Northern Pacific some time ago and had been located there. He arrested two without difficulty, but when he attempted to gather the third one in, there was an immediate display of guns, and Rauland was wounded so seriously that he died in 20 minutes, but succeeded in killing his assailant.
