Summary: Arthur Milford Sem Stanley, June 21, 1942 Arthur Sem died on June 21st, in the Minot hospital from injuries sustained on January 18th, while the Stanley Police Officer was investigating a traffic accident in the south part of the city. Officer Sem was called to the south part of the city Sunday morning for the purpose of investigating an accident that happened when Arnold Johnson and Arvid Anderson, driving a pickup, smashed into a 1930 Chevy coupe driven by Darwin Thompson of White Earth. The force of the crash caused the car to become a total wreck. Mr. Thompson, Miss Maxine McGrady, and Palmer Johnson, passengers in the car, escaped with minor injuries. The accident occurred a short distance from the Anderson home where the pickup and the coupe had crashed. Other cars that had their lights on to light up the scene blinded the drivers coming from the west so they were unable to see Mr. Sem who had walked a short distance west of the wrecked cars in an effort to signal the oncoming cars to stop. A car driven by Ferdinand Boettcher struck him as the driver was attempting to stop. The car suddenly swerved and the rear bumper caught Officer Sem’s left leg and jerked him down with such a force that his leg broke off and he was dragged several feet before the car could be stopped. Mr. Sem also suffered injury to his head and bruises to his body. Dr. M. G. Flath appeared on the scene and administered first aid and took the officer to Minot. Mr. Sem was a patient in the Minot hospital for eleven weeks following the accident. He was returned to the hospital on June 12th and died June 21st. His death was caused by abscesses in the lungs and brain from an infected blood stream. Arthur Milford Sem was born in Kindred, North Dakota on July 22nd, 1899, and was 42 years old at the time of his death. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Ole Sem. Arthur came to Carpio in 1917 and for some time worked for the railroad and then a hardware store where he remained for eleven years. He was married to Esther Nyre May 6th, 1922. They moved their family to Stanley where Mr. Sem was employed in the Anderson Department store until he accepted a position as City Marshall and Superintendent of the Water Works Department. He held that position until he was injured. He is survived by his wife and three children, Wallace, 19, Russell, 16, and Donna, 13, all of Stanley. He also leaves his father, Ole Sem of Carpio, three sisters and four brothers. His mother and two sisters preceded him in death.
