Summary: On May 29, 1996 at 4:30 p.m. Mr. Roger C. Sorensen (Teacher - Welding at NDYCC ) and Mr. Robert J. Tweedy (Cottage Director - Pine Cottage at NDYCC ) were attempting to cross the Little Missouri River at the Peaceful Valley Ranch in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park (Medora, ND) on horseback. Mr. Sorensen, upon entering the water, saw that it was too deep and swift and tried to return to shore. (At this point the water was approximately at the stirrup level of the horse which Mr. Sorensen was riding). As Mr. Sorensen began to turn his horse, the horse lunged forward, then lost its balance and fell sideways into the water. Mr. Sorensen was separated from the horse immediately after the fall. Both rider and horse were swept downstream about 400 yards. At about this point Mr. Sorensen submerged and failed to resurface. The purpose for Mr. Sorensen and Mr. Tweedy crossing the river was to reach an NDYCC TREK group hiking several miles that day in the park. They were acting as backup safety personnel for NDYCC TREK hikers who might be in need of assistance as well as to provide the group with food and drinking water supplies. Roger is survived by his wife Kay and their son Karl.
