Summary: Officer: Raymond A. Wietstock Date of Death: Aug. 16, 1966 Guard at NDSIS Age at death: 58 Residence North Hall, S.I.S., Mandan, ND Ray Wietstock began employment at the North Dakota State Industrial School on July 1, 1966, Mandan, ND. On August 16, 1966, two Industrial School boys were trying to escape from the school. In their attempt, Mr. Wietstock, who was on duty, tried to detain them, was beat on the head with a table leg and a piece of a club, known as an Indian Club. The two boys made their escape for a short period of time as they were apprehended about six miles south of Mandan on Highway #6, and returned to the custody of Sheriff Ed Wingenbach. An autopsy of Mr. Wietstock revealed that Wietstock had died from a heart attack caused by the beating on his head. Mr. Wietstock had been raised in the Arena, ND area and received his education in that area. He met his wife, Alma Pehl, in the Arena area. After farming from 1932 until 1950 in the Arena area, he moved with his family to Wing, ND, where he became employed with Billy Ripley Const. On July 1, 1966, Wietstock decided to seek employment with NDSIS, and after a month and a half of employment met his death in the hands of two juveniles. He leaves to mourn his wife, Alma and three children, two sons, Berle W., Vacaville, Calif., Allan W., Hayward, Calif. and daughter, Carol (Wietstock), Mrs. Jerry Auch, Bismarck, ND. Funeral services were held at Wing, ND where Wietstock had lived prior to moving to Mandan SIS.
