Summary: Bob Miller’s lifelong involvement with aviation officially began in 1953 at the controls of J-3 Cub. He soloed, and received his private pilot license in 1961. He entered military service in 1963, and received the United States Air Force pilot’s wings in 1964. He flew over 1000 combat sorties in Vietnam between 1965 and 1969. Upon returning to civilian life in his hometown of Casselton, Bob joined North Central Airlines flying Convair 580’s, then Republic Airlines, which later merged into Northwest Airlines. He captained DC-9s, MD-80’s and 757s and logged over 40,000 hours between 1961 and 2006. The name, Casselton – Robert J. Miller – Regional Airport, is recognition of the major role that Bob has played in the development and expansion of the facility. His tenacity and perseverance have been instrumental in creating an airport that is now the largest and busiest General Aviation facility in North Dakota. He has served as chairman of the Casselton Airport Authority since 1978. Under his tenure the airport has grown from a grass strip in 1978 to include 3900’ of concert runway, taxiway and ramp, 17 hangars, over 60 aircraft, 8 businesses and over 30 employees. His vision of the possibilities has been a major influence in determining the direction and success of the facility. Bob is a founding member and past chairman of the Fargo Air Museum. He is involved with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) on local, state and national levels. He coordinated a statewide effort to build two “Wright Flyers” which earned a special honor, an “Authenticity Certification” from the National Park Service. Bob Miller has served as chairman of the North Dakota Aeronautic Commission for the last 10 years and as an appointed member for 22 years. His calm, clear thinking and innovative problem solving have been trademarks of his service throughout years. He is a man who never seeks headlines. His patient ability to sort out workable solutions has been a real asset in determining public aviation policy. A recipient of the Greater North Dakota Development Association Community Leadership Award, Bob continues to bring his quiet, creative problem-solving approach to community development efforts.
