Summary: PDG Lucille Alef was the first Lady Lion inducted into the ND Lions Hall of Fame. Lion Lucille Alef, known to all Lions simply as “Dolly,” became involved in the Lions organization in 1975, when she attended her first Lions convention. She attended a total of 25 MD5 Conventions, 26 ND State Conventions, and 11 International Conventions. In 1980, she was elected charter president of the Hooterville Flion Lioness Club, and served on the executive committee in various positions. When the Lioness Club decided to close, Dolly joined the Hooterville Flion Lions Club. She held one of the top club offices five times and was a board member four times, as well as having been District Governor (1997-98) and having served many terms on the district cabinet. She was a board member for both the Lions Foundation and the Eye Bank. She was elected to serve as ND representative on the Council of Governors and in 2000 was appointed to serve on the MD5 Council Committee to rewrite the MD5 Convention guidelines. She attended the USA/Canada Forums. Dolly was the recipient of several awards, a Melvin Jones Fellowship, two International President’s Certificates of Appreciation, and the District Governor’s Excellence award. Lion Dolly served as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician with the Glenburn Ambulance Service for many years. She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross for 27 years, teaching first aid classes to the public and ambulance personnel, and for 17 years volunteered in the optometry clinic at the 5th Medical Center, Minot Air Force Base. She volunteered at the Minot Norse Hostfest, working every day during the celebration. She served her church as secretary, council member, treasurer, Ladies Group, and on various committees for many years. Dolly worked for various companies (Kraft Foods, Standard Oil etc.) in various cities where Tony, her husband, was stationed during his career with the USAF. While living in New Jersey, she served as a leader of her daughter’s Junior Girl Scout troop. When they moved to North Dakota, Dolly became a professional volunteer. Born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin (naturally an avid Packers fan), Dolly was married to past District Governor Tony Alef. They had three children and enjoyed five grandchildren. Dolly passed away in December of 2012.

Summary: The Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious honor for Lions at the state level. The first hall of Fame awards were given in 1982. Although this award has been a function of the Past District Governors Association, a recipient does not have to be a PDG to qualify but can be any Lion who has shown considerable dedication over a period of years. Nominees are judged by their activities on behalf of their home club, his or her district projects, North Dakota Lions programs, as well as those Multiple District 5 and Lions Clubs International. The committee also takes note of other community involvement outside of Lions. It is a great honor to be nominated for this prestigious recognition.
