Summary: Past District Governor Lion Olger Barsness was inducted into Lions Clubs International by the Minot Lions Club in Minot, ND, in January of 1954. He was continually selling more light bulbs during the club’s annual light bulb sale than any other member. In recent years he supported fundraisers such as the German Fest and the Garlic and Grape Festival. He continued to collect eye glasses from the community and his church and was active in assisting the club in its continuous eye glass drives. He worked by helping to clean, sort, bag, catalog and ship thousands of pairs of eye glasses for distribution in Central America. Lion Olger’s presence as a Lion has been felt not only in North Dakota and Arizona, but in other countries through this activity. He promoted caring for needy individuals in the Minot community through the purchase of eye glasses. He has assisted other Lions clubs with their annual garbage bag sale. He participated as a member of the Mesa Arizona Lions Club by supporting their activities during winters spent there. Lion Olger and his wife, Viola, celebrated 70 years of marriage prior to her death. They reared three daughters and one son. He was a farmer and then a baker, owning his own business. He first was a baker at the Velva Bakery in Velva before moving to Minot to conduct his business, Minot City Bakery. He continued to bake specialty breads for his church dinner food sales. The list of achievements and participation identifies his service in the North Dakota Bakers Association, serving as president in 1970-1971. He retired in 1974. Lion Barsness was recognized for his service by the North Dakota Baker’s Association as Baker of the Year. Lion Olger Barsness was active in other organizations including Bethany Lutheran Church, serving two years on Church Council. He was also active with the early Norsk Hostfest, baking up to 1900 baking powder biscuits! He was also a member of the Sons of Norway, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Eagles Club, and president of the Minot Bowling League. He received the North Dakota Salvation Army-Volunteer Service Award, United Service Organization Certificate of Distinction and the American Red Cross Award for Outstanding Generosity and Cooperation. When the Salvation Army needed a replacement truck, Lion Olger approached Souris River Telephone Company and asked them to donate a retiring truck. Souris River donated a 1993 Dodge Ram truck. Lion Olger remained active in service to the community and served as a role model for the younger Lions. He rarely missed a weekly Lions meeting and was frequently the first Lion in the door and the last to leave. If you needed someone for the invocation or a song leader, you called on Lion Olger Barsness.

Title: SHSND Foundation - Lions International Hall of Fame
Date:

Summary: The Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious honor for Lions at the state level. The first hall of Fame awards were given in 1982. Although this award has been a function of the Past District Governors Association, a recipient does not have to be a PDG to qualify but can be any Lion who has shown considerable dedication over a period of years. Nominees are judged by their activities on behalf of their home club, his or her district projects, North Dakota Lions programs, as well as those Multiple District 5 and Lions Clubs International. The committee also takes note of other community involvement outside of Lions. It is a great honor to be nominated for this prestigious recognition.
