Summary: Garry Freier is a native of North Dakota, born and raised in Streeter. He attended Valley City State College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in chemistry and a minor in physics. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance from North Dakota State University. He taught chemistry and physics at Glen Ullin High School for nine years, and was involved in a number of extra-curricular activities including the science club, class advisor, and girls’ track coach. During this time, Garry was also active in the community, joining the Glen Ullin Lions Club in 1965. He was active as an officer and program chairman for various activities. He was also involved with the Jaycees during his Glen Ullin years, serving as President, and taking on other leadership roles. He was selected and sponsored by the Glen Ullin Jaycees to represent their club in the state Outstanding Educator Competition. Upon completion of his Master’s degree, he was employed by the Human Service Center in Mandan, which required a move to Carson, ND. He transferred his membership in Lions and was soon a club officer. He was awarded a plaque for his leadership in fundraising activities. In July of 1978, a job promotion brought Garry and his family to Bismarck. Since there were no evening Lions clubs in Bismarck at that time, Garry was instrumental in the formation and chartering of the North Star Lions Club in January of 1980. He served as the first president of the club. Since that time, he has served as the chairman of countless committees, and has provided programs related to Lionism for his club members. He has received many awards, including a Melvin Jones Fellow, and 36 years of perfect attendance. He became a district governor in 1983, and is now one of the five district governors that belong to the North Star Club. BMX bicycle racing was another of Garry’s outstanding commitments. He was involved for 13 years and was president for 7 of those years. He served on the official fundraising committee to establish the million-dollar Cottonwood Complex, the home of BMX racing and other sports for the Bismarck area. Garry was also employed with the State Board for Vocational and Technical Education as the state supervisor for special needs programs for 21 years. Garry iis married to Lion Loris Freier, and they have two sons, Travis and Trent, who are now grown, but can remember traveling with their parents to many Lions conventions and functions from the time they were very young.

Title: SHSND Foundation - Lions International Hall of Fame
Date:

Summary: The Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious honor for Lions at the state level. The first hall of Fame awards were given in 1982. Although this award has been a function of the Past District Governors Association, a recipient does not have to be a PDG to qualify but can be any Lion who has shown considerable dedication over a period of years. Nominees are judged by their activities on behalf of their home club, his or her district projects, North Dakota Lions programs, as well as those Multiple District 5 and Lions Clubs International. The committee also takes note of other community involvement outside of Lions. It is a great honor to be nominated for this prestigious recognition.
