Summary: William F. “Bill” Gackle, of Kulm, North Dakota, served a two-year term as a director of Lions Clubs International after his election at the association’s 64th annual convention held in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 17-20, 1981. Past International Director Gackle is self-employed in farming and ranching, with implement and hardware affiliations. He is a veteran of World War II, serving three years in the US Air force and six years with the North Dakota National Guard. He was also a former state legislator, having served sixteen years in the North Dakota House of Representatives. A Lion and member of the Kulm Lions Club since 1965, Past Director Gackle has served in a number of positions including club president, district governor (1973-74), and zone chairman. In recognition of his service to the association, Past International Director Gackle has received numerous awards, including the 100% Club President Award, District Governor’s Extension Award, Membership Development Awards, various appreciation and certificate awards and the Ambasssador of Good Will Award, the highest honor the association can give to its members. He is also a Melvin Jones Fellow. Past International Director Gackle and his wife, Marilyn, have four children.

Summary: The Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious honor for Lions at the state level. The first hall of Fame awards were given in 1982. Although this award has been a function of the Past District Governors Association, a recipient does not have to be a PDG to qualify but can be any Lion who has shown considerable dedication over a period of years. Nominees are judged by their activities on behalf of their home club, his or her district projects, North Dakota Lions programs, as well as those Multiple District 5 and Lions Clubs International. The committee also takes note of other community involvement outside of Lions. It is a great honor to be nominated for this prestigious recognition.
