Summary: A graduate of Valley City State University, Brach Johnson first joined Lions in Glen Ullin, ND, while teaching music there from 1969 to 1974. He became involved at once in that club and was their secretary for three years. In 1974 he moved to Bismarck, and after a few years, he and Lion Garry Freier, who had also been teaching in Glen Ullin, started an evening Lions club in Bismarck—the North Star Lions—in 1980. Since then he has served as secretarytreasurer for four years, treasurer for two, and president twice. With his music background, he has made sure that the North Stars Lions SING, being their music leader for over 30 years. During the 1980’s, he came up with the idea for cooking and selling barbequed turkey legs as a fundraiser for the North Star Lions. Their club is still famous for this product at the Street Fair in Bismarck each year. When Lion Brach moved to Bismarck, he went to work as an agent for Farmers Union Insurance. He remained with that company for his entire working career, receiving awards for sales excellence for over twenty years, and being named to the company’s President’s Council six times. In addition, he has made good use of his music degree, becoming the choir director at Lord of Life Lutheran Church. He continued in that volunteer position for 40 years. He also performed in a men’s gospel quartet, the Twenty-Sixth Street Gospel, for over fifteen years. Brach has served on the board of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck for nearly 20 years, having served both as president and secretary during that time. Always interested in sports, Brach became the chairman of the Lions All-Star basketball games in the 1980’s when that activity was still run by the Lions Foundation, and served in that capacity for 5 years. There became a need for a Lions Eye Bank during this time, and Lion Brach was one of the dedicated Lions on the ground floor of forming first a donor bank, and eventually a fully operational tissue bank, which now operates as Dakota Lions Sight and Health. Lion Brach served as District Governor from 1992-1993, and then was elected Council Chairman the following year from 1993-1994. He has attended most state conventions and MD-5 conventions since becoming a Lion, and has been a convention chairman in Bismarck three times. He has attended International Conventions in Hong Kong, Phoenix, Minneapolis, and Denver. He and PDG Marian Johnson have been married since 1970 and have two married children, Tim Johnson and Jessica Paulsen, also active Lions in the Bismarck area. His favorite pastimes are golfing, hunting, and RV travel.

Title: SHSND Foundation - Lions International Hall of Fame
Date:

Summary: The Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious honor for Lions at the state level. The first hall of Fame awards were given in 1982. Although this award has been a function of the Past District Governors Association, a recipient does not have to be a PDG to qualify but can be any Lion who has shown considerable dedication over a period of years. Nominees are judged by their activities on behalf of their home club, his or her district projects, North Dakota Lions programs, as well as those Multiple District 5 and Lions Clubs International. The committee also takes note of other community involvement outside of Lions. It is a great honor to be nominated for this prestigious recognition.
