Summary: Lion Marian Johnson is originally from the eastern part of North Dakota, growing up on a farm 12 miles west of Cooperstown. She graduated from Glenfield-Sutton High School (now Midkota), then received a bachelor’s degree in education from Valley City State University, with a major in English and minors in library and speech. She taught for several years in Glen Ullin, ND. She began Lions as a Lioness, a charter member of the Bismarck Prairie Rose Lioness Club in 1982, which re-chartered as a Lions club in 1992. During both her Lioness and Lions years she served as secretary and president as well as many other positions in the club, including fundraising chairman. While searching for a fundraiser back in 1983, one of the members said, “I wish we could find stationery to sell that said, ‘North Dakota’ on it.” Marian thought that was a great idea and began experimenting with pen and ink sketching. Two wonderful things happened: The Prairie Rose Lions soon had a popular fundraiser with new Christmas cards that sold like hotcakes each year; and, unable to quit sketching, Marian soon had enough designs to start her own business, The Inkwell. Once affiliated with Pride of Dakota, Marian had her greeting cards in over 50 gift shops around the state of North Dakota. She continued in that business until 2004. Nothing lasts forever, and when the Prairie Rose sales of Christmas cards waned, Lion Marian, being 100% Norwegian, led the charge for the club to start rolling and selling lefse at the Bismarck Street Fair. Their first attempts were pretty humorous to look back upon, but thanks to a dedicated group of lefse chairpersons in the club over the years, their project has flourished. It has even brought in new members who have joined to learn to roll lefse. By the late 1990’s, Lion Marian began serving on district cabinets and on convention planning committees. She was zone chairperson in 1999-2000, and served as District Governor for 5NC during 2005-2006. In the years since her governorship, she edited the State Lions Directory for three years, attended three MD5 Youth Camps, helped charter the University of Mary Campus Lions Club, and co-chaired the 2008 State Lions Convention with her husband, past Council Chairperson Brach Johnson. She is a Melvin Jones Fellow, and has received the International Leadership Award, the International President’s Award, and a President’s Certificate of Appreciation. Lion Marian and her husband Brach have two adult children and three grandchildren.

Title: SHSND Foundation - Lions International Hall of Fame
Date:

Summary: The Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious honor for Lions at the state level. The first hall of Fame awards were given in 1982. Although this award has been a function of the Past District Governors Association, a recipient does not have to be a PDG to qualify but can be any Lion who has shown considerable dedication over a period of years. Nominees are judged by their activities on behalf of their home club, his or her district projects, North Dakota Lions programs, as well as those Multiple District 5 and Lions Clubs International. The committee also takes note of other community involvement outside of Lions. It is a great honor to be nominated for this prestigious recognition.
