Summary: Lion Sam Kaufman was born in 1917, on a farm near Marion, SD. He attended country school, graduated from Marion High School, Freeman Academy, and completed two years of college at Freeman Junior College, with a degree in elementary education. He taught country school for three years before being inducted into the service. He served in the Army Signal Corps and later with a specialized training unit. He was discharged in 1944. He and Doris Groves were married May 25, 1944. Sam and Doris were the parents of one son, Brian. Lion Sam was an active Lion after joining the organization in 1962. He held all offices in the local club except for secretary and treasurer, culminating in serving as president during 1984-85. He continued to be willing to serve the club in any capacity. Sam’s eagerness to serve as a Lion is proven by his participation in all the club’s activities. Sam, who rarely missed a club meeting, was always one of the front runners in selling tickets to the main fundraisers, the annual raffle, and the Buffalo Feed. The Jamestown Lions Club members choose him to receive the coveted Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Lion Sam served as zone chairman, Deputy District Governor and District Governor (1987-88). Lion Sam was an outstanding conventioneer. He attended all ND District and Multi-District Conventions and actively participated not only as a delegate, but you could usually find him running an orientation seminar or serving in some other capacity to help make the convention a success. He attended the Lions International Conventions in Taiwan, Miami, Denver, Phoenix, St. Louis, and Minneapolis. Sam was a board member and Past President of the ND Lions Foundation. During his years of employment, Sam joined the firm of Central Lumber Company. While employed by this firm, he managed their yards at Fulda, MN, Bowdle and Mobridge, SD, and by the Marion Lumber in Marion. In May of 1962, Sam accepted employment with C. H. Carpenter Lumber Company, and the family moved to Jamestown, ND. His career there included manager of their Jamestown yard and superintendent of their yards at Jamestown, Bismarck, Valley City and Litchville. Sam’s employment with C.H. Carpenter Lumber Company lasted 29 years. He retired in August 1991. Sam and Doris spent the winter months in Hawaii, Texas, and Arizona. Sam was an active participant in the American Legion, Elks, and Jamestown Country Club. During his working years, he was active in the ND Lumbermen’s Association, and was named ND Lumber Dealer of the Year. Sam was an active member of the Jamestown Area Chamber where, he served on several committees. The Kaufmans were members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, where he served as church treasurer and on the administration board.

Title: SHSND Foundation - Lions International Hall of Fame
Date:

Summary: The Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious honor for Lions at the state level. The first hall of Fame awards were given in 1982. Although this award has been a function of the Past District Governors Association, a recipient does not have to be a PDG to qualify but can be any Lion who has shown considerable dedication over a period of years. Nominees are judged by their activities on behalf of their home club, his or her district projects, North Dakota Lions programs, as well as those Multiple District 5 and Lions Clubs International. The committee also takes note of other community involvement outside of Lions. It is a great honor to be nominated for this prestigious recognition.
