Summary: James McGuigan was born in 1930 and graduated from Leonard High School in 1948. He served four years in the navy as an aviation mechanic, from 1950-1954. When he returned to Leonard, he became active in community affairs. Always being civic minded, Jim served many years on the Maple River School Board and on the township board. When the Leonard Lions Club was chartered, Jim became an enthusiastic member, serving through club offices to zone chairman, and in 1965 he was elected district governor for eastern North Dakota. Jim attended 3 international Lions conventions, and over the years of his Lions membership he missed only one MD5 convention in 19 years. (MD5 stands for Multiple District 5 which is North Dakota, South Dakota, and Saskatchewan.) Besides his Lions Club activities, he served as president of the commercial club in Leonard, and then treasurer for many years. In 1956 he was elected to the Leonard city commission, and then became mayor four years later. He remained in that position for 16 years. Another interest of Jim’s was auction sales, and he learned enough about auctioneering to cry auctions for church bazaars, the Lions Club white elephant sales, and also some local sales. He and his wife Grace loved music and he played the piano with amazing zeal. He also handcrafted several grandfather clocks as a hobby later in his life.

Summary: The Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious honor for Lions at the state level. The first hall of Fame awards were given in 1982. Although this award has been a function of the Past District Governors Association, a recipient does not have to be a PDG to qualify but can be any Lion who has shown considerable dedication over a period of years. Nominees are judged by their activities on behalf of their home club, his or her district projects, North Dakota Lions programs, as well as those Multiple District 5 and Lions Clubs International. The committee also takes note of other community involvement outside of Lions. It is a great honor to be nominated for this prestigious recognition.
