Summary: Lion Chuck Whitney was born in Connecticut and graduated from the Taft School in Watertown before spending a year as an exchange student in England. He then enrolled at UNC—Chapel Hill where he completed his undergraduate studies. He subsequently attended the Free University of Brussels where he studied medicine. Taking a break from academics, Chuck returned to Connecticut. In June of 1979, he began a lengthy odyssey on a Suzuki 750 motorcycle that ended with employment in Watford City, North Dakota, working on a seismograph crew. In January 1982, medicine called and Chuck enrolled in Palmer College of Chiropractic, where he graduated cum laude in March of 1985. It was at Palmer that he met his wife Terri who completed a degree in office management. They settled in Bowman. They have three children—Chad, Jennifer, and Brent. Jennifer and her husband Kyle gifted them with grandson William in 2017. Lion Chuck joined the Bowman Lions in 1986 and has been club president twice and served innumerable terms on the club’s board of directors. He served as 5NW District Governor in 2005-2006 and had the privilege of making the trip to Hong Kong with Terri for his installation. He has supported other District Governors by serving on various cabinets for the past 30 years. He is especially proud of his service to the Lions Eye Bank of North Dakota, having served in every capacity on its executive board. Lion Chuck was instrumental in facilitating the Eye Bank of North Dakota’s significant financial gift to the Lions Foundation of North Dakota to be used for vision-related grants. Also, Lion Chuck has worked with the North Dakota Optometric Association since 1990 to further the Vision USA program. Lion Chuck has set impossibly high standards for contributions to his local community. He was a member of the Bowman City Commission from 2012 to 2016, and served a term on the park and recreation board. He was Team Doctor for the Bowman High School Athletic Department for eight years and was recognized by the ND High School Athletic Association for that service. He was on the St. Luke’s Hospital Board of Directors for two years, served on the Bowman ambulance squad for 10 years, and organized dozens of blood drives in the city. Lion Chuck also served on the Bowman Lutheran Church Council. Because of his love of old cars, Lion Chuck has restored and refurbished more than 20 of them in the past 40 years. He was instrumental in organizing the Bowman Car Show from 1989 to 2014. Lion Terry rues the day she showed him how to use eBay! Lion Chuck wishes to thank all of the dedicated, hard-working Lions with whom he has had the joy to serve thus far. We look forward to the rest of the story!

Title: SHSND Foundation - Lions International Hall of Fame
Date:

Summary: The Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious honor for Lions at the state level. The first hall of Fame awards were given in 1982. Although this award has been a function of the Past District Governors Association, a recipient does not have to be a PDG to qualify but can be any Lion who has shown considerable dedication over a period of years. Nominees are judged by their activities on behalf of their home club, his or her district projects, North Dakota Lions programs, as well as those Multiple District 5 and Lions Clubs International. The committee also takes note of other community involvement outside of Lions. It is a great honor to be nominated for this prestigious recognition.
