Title: Harry Zacher

Summary: Harry Zacher was a charter member of the Elgin Lions Club and was its first president. He went on to become zone chairman, deputy governor, and District Governor. He served his club as membership chairman, convention chairman, assistant secretary, and he chaired many special events for the Elgin Lions Club. Harry sponsored 21 new members into his local Lions Club. At the district level, Harry held many cabinet posts including extension chairman, new member retention, youth committee, and constitution and by-laws committee. He attended six International Conventions and numerous State and District Conclaves. He won six Extension Awards and was one of those instrumental in forming the North Dakota Past District Governors’ Association. Harry served as the first treasurer of the organization and served as president in 1987-1988. Harry had many years of perfect attendance. Harry was very active with the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department, starting in 1951 and serving until 1978. He served many years as assistant fire chief and as fire chief. He was the Elgin fire inspector for seven years and was elected North Dakota Fireman’s Association President from 1968 to 1969. He served on the Elgin planning and zoning committee and was the chairman when he was elected to the city council. Harry was very active in his church, Zion Lutheran, teaching Sunday School, serving as deacon and as president of the Council. He was also the first president of the Grant County Water Board, served on the board of directors of the North Dakota Water Users Association and in the North Dakota Water Resource Districts Association, serving two terms as president. He was appointed to the North Dakota Soil Conservation Committee and to the Selective Service System of SW North Dakota. In Elgin, he was active in the Commercial Club, Sportsman’s Club, Bowling Association, and the Elgin Golf Association. He chaired many annual and special city celebrations.

Summary: The Hall of Fame award is the most prestigious honor for Lions at the state level. The first hall of Fame awards were given in 1982. Although this award has been a function of the Past District Governors Association, a recipient does not have to be a PDG to qualify but can be any Lion who has shown considerable dedication over a period of years. Nominees are judged by their activities on behalf of their home club, his or her district projects, North Dakota Lions programs, as well as those Multiple District 5 and Lions Clubs International. The committee also takes note of other community involvement outside of Lions. It is a great honor to be nominated for this prestigious recognition.
