Summary: Calvin L. Andrist (1887-1974) was affiliated with the Divide County Journal from 1921 until his death in 1974. Andrist retired in 1958 when he leased and subsequently sold the Divide County Journal to his son, John. Cal Andrist began his newspaper career in 1907 at the Kermit News. His pay was a room and three meals a day. In 1908, he was hired to run the Larson Leader, and in 1909 he moved on to the Ambrose Tribune. In 1912, Andrist was asked by a group of local businessmen to edit the Noonan Republican. The next year he purchased the paper from them, and operated it until 1917, when he leased the paper and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in France in World War I. Andrist and Nansen Henderson bought the Divide County Journal in 1921. In 1937 Andrist purchased his partner's interest. He bought the Divide County Farmers Press in 1946 and the Noonan Miner in the early 1950s to become the only remaining publisher in Divide County. He served as president of the North Dakota Press Association in 1954. His name was the 21st to be enshrined in the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame.
