Summary: John M Andrist (1932- ) grew up working for his father, Calvin Andrist, at the Divide County Journal in Crosby, then began climbing a ladder that would take him to the presidency of the National Newspaper Association. He worked as a printer's devil and linotype operator before becoming managing editor at The Journal in 1958 and publisher in 1961, when he purchased the business from his father. Andrist became active in the North Dakota Press Association, serving as president in 1970-71. In 1989-90 he became the only North Dakotan elected president of the National Newspaper Association. In 1991 he sold the business to his son, Steve, and began a 20-plus-year second career as a state senator. In 55 years he never missed a weekly installment of his acclaimed column, John-a-Dreams, continuing to write it in retirement. In 2002, he received the Amos Award, the National Newspaper Association's highest honor, for distinguished service to the community press. He is a recipient of the North Dakota National Leadership Award of Excellence, presented by Gov. George Sinner. Despite achieving prominence as a state and national leader in his chosen field, family and community have always been the driving force behind his achievements. Andrist has been a member of NDNA since 1948. He helped initiate the association's Better Newspaper Contest, and served for more than 25 years as chairman of its Legislative Committee, later the Government Relations Committee, presiding over a number of advancements including the eventual decision to take public notice rate-setting out of the hands of the Legislature. After many years on the board of the North Dakota Newspaper Association Education Foundation, he was bestowed with honorary lifetime membership. He also achieved lifetime membership with the Society of Professional Journalists. Andrist served 12 years as regional director of the National Newspaper Association before becoming its president. During his presidency, he and his wife, Elaine, attended annual newspaper association conventions in more than 20 states. In 2000 he was inducted as the 45th member of the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame.
