Summary: Ralph Gordon Beede (1895-1969) was born in South Dakota but at an early age moved to Rolla, N.D. He got his early education in Rolla and attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He taught school for a year at McClusky, N.D., and in 1918 he joined the Army. Beede bought his first newspaper, The Sioux County Record, in the fall of 1919. The paper, a Fort Yates Non Partisan League newspaper, was set to discontinue publication when Beede bought it. There was no typesetting equipment so the paper was entirely hand set. During this period Beede also studied law, and in 1923 he took and passed the State Bar Exam in Grand Forks. He then sold the newspaper and moved to Minot to serve as a law intern for a local attorney. In 1925 Beede bought the Elgin Times. He changed the name of the paper to The Grant County News, which he published weekly in addition to practicing law in Elgin until 1965 when he sold the paper. In 1939 Beede was elected to the North Dakota legislature where he served in the House of Representatives until 1960. During this time he worked on several major committees. He served as chairman of the Legislative Research Committee, was minority and majority leader, and Speaker of the House.
