Summary: Norman B. Black (1865-1931), pioneer publisher of the Fargo Forum, was elected one of the first members of the North Dakota Press Hall of Fame in 1933. The man who eventually became known as the "idol of the North Dakota newspaper man" was born in Porte Hope, Ont. An apprentice to a hometown printer at the age of 13, he was publisher of the Merrill, Wisconsin, Times at 20. Black came to North Dakota to head the Grand Forks Times, which he later helped to consolidate with George Winship's Herald in 1909. In 1917, Black left the Times-Herald to acquire with associates the Fargo Forum. Later he became president of a group that acquired the Minot Daily News. For a quarter of a century Black took a leading part in operating the North Dakota Press Association, serving as president in 1911 and 1912. He also helped draft laws that were fair to the North Dakota publishers, one time taking the floor of the state senate to argue and win his point. Urged to run for the U.S. Senate, Black declined in favor of his position among newspaper men.
