Summary: Oliver S. Borlaug's 45-year newspaper career earned him distinction as one of North Dakota's best and most prolific publishers and editors. He was a frequent winner of state and national awards, including first places in general excellence and editorial writing. Throughout his 32 years at the Washburn Leader, he maintained a full page of editorial comment on issues of local, state and national significance. This was a rare accomplishment among small town weekly newspapers. Borlaug started his career in production in 1938 at the Kidder County News, and later at the Steele Ozone. In 1946 he became shop foreman at the Valley City Times Record, and in 1952 went to work at the Minot Daily News as production floor manager. In 1952 he became owner, publisher and editor of the Washburn Leader and Wilton News, where he remained until his retirement in 1985. His many interests included aviation and history. Borlaug served in the Air Corps during World War II. He wrote a book about his unit in China. His many contributions to North Dakota history included a print shop he created at the county museum in Washburn. He was president of the North Dakota Press Association from 1963-64, and served as judge of numerous state and national "better newspaper" contests. Borlaug belonged to the Washburn Civic Club, the Washburn Lions Club, and the American Legion. His many civic honors included awards for helping farmers and for community leadership, and his special efforts in reporting children's accomplishments. He was inducted into the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame in 1998.
