Summary: Jay A. Bryant was publisher of the Napoleon Homestead for 34 years. The grandson of the founder of the newspaper, George A. Bryant, he became publisher in 1940, following his father, Oris F. Bryant. Mr. Bryant wrote a weekly column called, "Wandering Scribe." He had a gifted way of writing, especially when promoting something for the good of the community, or when giving credit to someone for their community efforts. He continued the column even after he sold the newspaper. In 1940, Mr. Bryant became the first Logan County resident to seek a state elective office. He was candidate for state auditor. He was appointed deputy Secretary of State in 1964. In 1965 the Bryants moved to Bismarck. He retired that office in 1972. Mr. Bryant was a board member of the North Dakota Press Association, serving as its president in 1949. He was named to the 50-year club in 1972. He was a director of the National Newspaper Association. Locally, he was a charter member of the Napoleon Lions Club, and a few years before his death on Feb. 18, 1985, he was selected as an honorary member of the club. He was a member of Napoleon Commercial Club, Beaver Lake Park Committee, Red Cross, Young Republicans, a director of the Greater North Dakota Association, precinct committeeman and a member of Shriners Club. He was elected Alumnus of the Year by the Napoleon School, and was active in the Napoleon Fire Department and the PTA.

  • “Collection Number” searches the Collection Number field only and requires an exact match.

The “DETAILS” button provides additional information about an item, as well as the following options:

  • “Collection Summary” details the contents of the entire collection in which the selected item is located.
  • You can print the image and its corresponding details by selecting “Print".
  • “Digitized Images from the Collection” returns a list of all digitized items within that collection (available from the “Collection Summary” screen).
