Summary: Walter F. Cushing (1857-1935) edited and published a number of North Dakota newspapers. He was elected to the North Dakota Press Hall of Fame in 1940, its tenth member. He was educated at Columbia University, and then became editor of a country newspaper in upper Pennsylvania in 1879. Cushing came to North Dakota planning to start a newspaper in Valley City. But when he arrived in Valley City he discovered that the town already had an established newspaper so he went into the lumber and grain buying businesses. He remained in Valley City until 1887. Cushing then moved to Missoula, Mont., where he started that city's first daily paper. He returned to North Dakota in 1892 and worked for the Valley City Times-Record and later for the Republican and Argus in Fargo. He then worked as an editor of the Bismarck Tribune under publisher Clement Lounsberry. Cushing later became editor of the Fargo News, and went into partnership with others to buy the paper, changing it to the Courier News. He subsequently started the Fargo Post. In 1919 Cushing left Fargo to become publisher of the Beach Advance, which he operated until his death.
