Summary: Hal S. Davies' newspaper career spanned seven decades. He was associated with the Minot Daily News for more than 60 years and, at the time of his death, Davies was the chairman of the board of directors of the Minot newspaper. Davies was born Feb. 21, 1886 in Euclid, Minn. While in high school he worked for the Crookston Times and later for the St. Paul Pioneer Dispatch, the Fargo Morning Call, the Devils Lake Journal and the Forum of Fargo. In 1920, Davies, H.D. Paulson, Norman G. Black and Norman D. Black, all of Fargo, bought the Minot Daily News with the understanding that Davies would be the publisher. In 1938 Davies acquired the stock of his associates to become full owner of the newspaper. Davies was an active member of several civic and newspaper organizations and a past president of the Northwest Daily Press Association and the North Dakota Associated Press. Davies was also a director of the Inland Daily Press Association and a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the North Dakota Press Association. In 1952 the North Dakota Associated Press honored Davies on his anniversary of 50 years in the newspaper business. He was also honored as a member of the 50-year club of the North Dakota Press Association. In June of 1970 he was honored for his 50 years as publisher and president of the Minot Daily News, and in 1985 he was named to the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame.
