Summary: Blanche M. Denison (1917-1993) began working at the Towner County Record Herald in Cando in 1952 after her husband, Editor Pete Denison, suffered a heart attack. She had some secretarial training that helped her produce the newspaper, and over the years developed a writing style that won her several editorial awards. She assumed advertising duties and was able to convince Cando business owners they needed to advertise their businesses regularly. She served as co-publisher of the Record-Herald with her husband, Pete, from 1974-1979. Denison researched and wrote Cando's 75th anniversary history, and updated it in 1984 for the Centennial history book. After her husband's death in 1985 she continued to work full time at the newspaper. Although she retired in 1987, she continued to write her popular weekly editorials until two weeks before her death in July 1993. Denison won the National Newspaper Association Golden Quill Award in 1975, and the North Dakota Newspaper Association's "Best Editorial" award in 1978. Her columns were a driving force for economic development and medical services in Cando. She served her church as a Sunday school teacher and was a long-time member of the Entre Nous Federated Club. She was also a tireless supporter of North Dakota, small towns and agricultural producers. She was active in North Dakota Press Women, serving as its president in 1954. In 1995 she and her husband, Peter, were inducted together into the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame.
