In 1980 he became the fourth person to receive the American Legion's Press Award. He had a keen interest in government, local, state and national, serving as a member of his local school board, city commission and as a state senator He was active in the Republican Party, was endorsed for governor in 1968, and served as an executive assistant to U.S. Sen. Mark Andrews and as deputy director of public affairs for the US Department of Transportation. In 1999 he became the 44th member of the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame.
