Summary: Howard F. Doherty was known as a leading proponent of press freedoms in North Dakota. Legislators respected him for his work in favor of open meetings and public notices. He provided humorous and friendly but meaningful, opposition to legislation he thought harmful to North Dakota newspapers. Doherty was owner, publisher and editor of the Cavalier County Republican in Langdon until his retirement in 1982. Over his long newspaper career he also was owner, publisher and editor of the Killdeer Herald and manager/editor of the Dickinson Press. Doherty was recognized in Minneapolis and Washington, D.C., for his expertise in community newspapers. He participated in roundtable discussions in several states, providing valuable insight to young editors. Throughout his career he served on various North Dakota Newspaper Association committees. He was president in 1974 and a member of NDPA/NDNA's board of directors from 1966 to 1973. He was an American Newspaper representative, North Central Region, from 1976 to 1981. Among his many honors and distinctions was a NDPA award in 1970 for "Most Excellent Newspaper." He authored a newspaper column entitled, A Little Blarney. He was state American Legion commander in 1953-54 and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars from 1946 until his death at the age of 76. Civic accomplishments included membership in Knights of Columbus, a board member of North Dakota Blue Cross Blue Shield from 1968-80, secretary of the North Dakota Senate in 1961, and Dunn County State Representative in 1957 and 1959. He was inducted into the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame in 1958.
