Summary: Maj. Alanson W. Edwards (1840-1908), founder of the Fargo Forum in 1891, became the ninth newspaperman to enter the Hall of Fame. Edwards was a giant, 400-pound man who fought in the Civil War, after which he worked at the newspaper in Gillespie, Ill. Edwards passed through Fargo in 1876 on his way to the Black Hills. He returned two years later to start a newspaper. After the Republican and the Argus, he established the Fargo Forum in 1891. He was interested in civic affairs, helping to organize the Fargo water company and putting money into the paper mill, the foundry, the Fargo Southern railway, street cars and electric light and gas plants. He also served in the state legislature. Edwards, who made and lost several fortunes in the newspaper business in Fargo, was instrumental in rebuilding the city after the fire of 1893.
