Summary: S. Hugh Farrington got his baptism in the newspaper business when, as a young boy, he worked as a printer's devil at the Roberts County Record in New Effington, S.D., where his father was publisher and postmaster. Farrington came to North Dakota in 1926, assuming dual responsibilities as editor and Linotype operator at the Wells County Free Press in Fessenden. The New York Times reprinted one of his editorials that called for $1 bushel wheat. Farrington became editor of the Benson County Farmers Press in Minnewauken in 1931. Published in a town of less than 500 people, the newspaper sold to more than 3,000 subscribers. In 1946 he bought the Harvey Herald, which he published until 1972 when he turned the reins over to his son, Steve. He won many state awards, and his popular column, "Chopped Feed," delighted Herald readers for many years. As a forward-looking publisher, Farrington was an organizer of the North Central Printing Company in Rugby. It was the first offset printing plant owned by a consortium of weekly newspaper publishers. Active in the North Dakota Press Association for nearly half a century, Farrington served as its president in 1947. He also was a member of NDNA's Hall of Fame committee. Notable among his many civic commitments was his work as co-chairman of a building fund drive for Harvey's hospital. Farrington also was district lieutenant governor of Kiwanis, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He wrote descriptively of nature. He was inducted into the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame in 1998.
