Summary: Mark Forkner (1879-1947) served two terms as president of the North Dakota Press Association in 1919-20, leading a fight to amend the Brinton Law to make it possible to publish private legal notices in any county newspaper. Forkner served as vice president and later as secretary of the association for many years. He began his newspaper work in Wahpeton following his discharge from the infantry in 1899 after having served in the Spanish-American War. Forkner worked seven years at Morris, Minn., and then moved to Langdon in 1908 to work at the Cavalier County Republican. In 1912 he bought the paper with B.E. Groom, expanded it, and became sole owner when Groom sold out in 1925. Forkner was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953 as its 13th member.
