Summary: William H. Francis (1883-1964) started the Hall of Fame in 1932 when he was president of the North Dakota Newspaper Association. He served on the association's selection committee for 30 years. He worked for six years on newspapers at Drayton, Cavalier, Casselton, Cooperstown and Wimbledon before founding the Ruso Record in 1907. Two years later he went to work for a job printing shop in Fargo. He purchased the McHenry County Journal, at Velva in 1910, and continued publishing the paper, later the Velva Journal, until 1949. In 1932 he was president of the North Dakota Press Association. In 1937 he became secretary of the Publishers Mutual Insurance Company, serving as secretary-manager for about 25 years. In 1971 he became the 16th inductee to the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame.

  • “Digitized Images from the Collection” returns a list of all digitized items within that collection (available from the “Collection Summary” screen).
