Summary: Fred S. Goddard (1862-1915) became the 11th inductee of the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame in 1941. He learned the trade of a printer from his father in the shop of the North Iowa Times. In 1883 Goddard homesteaded in Hudson township of Dickey County and returned to the printing business after one year, working at the Dickey County Leader in Ellendale. In 1887 he bought the Leader with E.J. More, whose share passed to Ed A. Smith in 1891 and to Alex R. Wright six years later. Goddard gained sole ownership of the Leader in 1906 for his half interest in the Oakes Republican. Goddard served as mayor of Ellendale for a term, and as the postmaster and a member of the board of trustees of the State Normal Industrial School at Ellendale. He continued publishing the Leader until his death.
