Summary: John O. Hjelle was editor of the Bismarck Tribune for 31 years when he retired in December, 1979. He worked for the paper for 40 years. Hjelle was born in Mercer, N.D., in 1913. He graduated from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, in 1936 and became a reporter for the Tribune. He was named editor in 1948. He also served three years as an administrative assistant to U.S. Sen. Milton R. Young. Hjelle was a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and was president of the North Dakota Press Association in 1969. He had also served as either chairman or president of the North Dakota Associated Press and the North Dakota chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the professional journalism society. He was charter member and first chairman of the North Dakota Fair Trial-Free Press Council and a charter member of the Special Citizens Committee for Court Improvement and the Citizens Council for Judicial Improvement. For his work in these groups, Hjelle received the 1974 Liberty Bell award from the State Bar Association of North Dakota. In 1950, Hjelle received a distinguished service award from the Bismarck Jaycees and in 1963, Luther College gave him a distinguished service award. He was named to the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame in 1985.
