Summary: Frank Hornstein was publisher of The Pierce County Tribune in Rugby for 40 years. During his years at the Tribune he established himself as one of the state's top personal columnists and editors. Hornstein, a native of the Rugby, ND area, came into the newspaper business after his marriage to another Rugby native, Catharine Bratton, whose father, Luther Bratton was publisher of the Tribune. Hornstein began his newspaper career when his father-in-law pointed him toward Main Street and told him to find some news. From 1940 to 1969 he wrote for and edited the Tribune. He also worked in the pressroom, and feeding the sheet-fed letter press press. In 1969 Hornstein played a major role in the development of North Central Printing, North Dakota's first community central offset printing plant. During the time he was with the Tribune the paper won several awards. The North Dakota Newspaper Association twice awarded the Tribune the association's "General Excellence" award, and Hornstein won the "Best Single Editorial" and "Best Personal Column" awards. The latter was given for his last column, a column he wrote from his hospital bed. He served as president of the North Dakota Press Association in 1956, and in 1984 he became the 26th inductee of the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame.
